Hawksbill is the tallest mountain in Shenandoah National Park. It offers a 360 degree observation platform and a shelter at the summit, the latter a rarity in SNP (if I remember correctly, it’s only a day-use shelter though). The views are excellent, and on a clear day you’ve got a great angle to view the exposed face of Old Rag in the distance. But, despite all that it has going for it, I have to admit there are plenty of summit hikes I enjoy more in the park. Hawksbill doesn’t have the best angle for catching a sunset, but you can still see one. I’ve hiked this mountain in both the summer and fall. I thought the fall was a bit better because it was less hazy, and the views were less obscured with the trees bare.
